WayMarkr in the News

National GeographicA bunch of things have been happening with the WayMarkr project!

WayMarkr was recently profiled in The Camera Phone Book, a National Geographic title on digital photography and cameraphones.  Mike Bukhin also presented WayMakr at Where 2.0 and WayMarkr will soon be highlighted on the N-Series website.

WayMarkr & Flickr

There is a new beta release of WayMarkr with a number of new features.

  • Flickr Support - WayMarkr now imports your images directly into Flickr! This new feature allows you to leverage the Flickr community to share WayMarkr photos. Photoset names become Flickr tags and any location information (cell tower, lat/lon) will also be mapped in as tags. Make sure to download the latest version fo WayMarkr and install it on your phone. When WayMarkr starts up, enter your Flickr ‘upload via email’ address and your WayMarked images will automatically appear in Flickr. To get your ‘upload via email’ address, click here.
  • Photo Upload Interval - For those of you who don’t have flat rate data plans, WayMarkr now lets you control how often a photo is taken! When the app starts up, you can choose from ‘as quick as possible’ to ‘every hour’.
  • External GPS Support - WayMarkr now supports an external Bluetooth GPS device. With a paired GPS dongle, WayMarkr photos are uploaded with pinpoint latitude and longitude values. Images will automatically appear on a map on the WayMarkr website.
  • Miscellaneous Updates - Flash support for night photos, interface updates, etc.

Make sure to erase the old version of WayMarkr before installing the new one. After erasing, point your phone’s browser to http://get.waymarkr.com and download the appropriate version. Third edition phones still need the app to be Bluetoothed.

Enjoy and please send us any feedback you have!

Painting with Perspective

WayMarkr was shown at the ITP fall show as part of the painting with perspective project. Multiple real time cell phones running WayMarkr were on the floor during the show and participants were able to paint with these vantage points. Click here for all the collages.

Site Problems

Dear users,

We’re having a number of issues with our ISP.  Uploading with WayMarkr still works but the site is very flaky.  We’re working on a resolution for this issue.

Again we apologize.  Hopefully this will lbe resolved and stabilized soon.

WayMarkr off to MUM

This week we’ll be taking WayMarkr to the MUM, the fifth annual conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Multimedia. The conference has an amazing linie up of topnotch talent from throughout the mobile industry. It should be a grate time. We also ended up in the Netscape Tech News recently (it was aparently posted some time ago but its news to me). Go team!

We’re Back!

We have fixed our ISP problems and are now in much better shape. Apologies again for the website downtime this week. Keep on WayMarking!

Site Problems

We’re experiencing poor performance with FastCGI and our internet service provider.  The mechanism that records WayMarkr photos is separate from the website that displays them so although the website may not be responding your photos are still being saved.  We’re very sorry about this and will try to get it resolved as soon as possible.  thanks

Rotating Sets

Depending on how you wear/place the WayMarkr, it’s possible that photos will be uploaded sideways or upside down - very annoying.  Today we have added the ability for you to be able rotate your WayMarkr photos so that you don’t have to put your monitor on its side to see what’s going on.
We’re also close to releasing a WayMarkr version that supports an external GPS module w/bluetooth.  If you have an external GPS module, WayMarkr photos will come in with GPS level accuracy and automagically appear on the map!  Stay tuned.

ZoneTag

We’ve integrated the WayMarkr with Yahoo’s ZoneTag project. They’ve been nice enough to give us access to their API so that we can leverage their community driven database. This will allow us to translate resolvable cell tower information into latitude and longitude.

What does this mean for you?

When photos are uploaded with the WayMarkr (first and second edition phones, for now) they might be assigned a latitude and longitude for mapping purposes and automagically appear under ‘my maps’. The accuracy of the location will depend on the accuracy of the ZoneTag database. You can then move the pushpins on the map to more accurate coordinates using our web interface. Have fun!

Symbian 1st Edition - N6600

We received this message from a few days back:

Hi Guys,

I have a N6600 and installed Symbian v1 Python followed by the main app. After installation when I click on it in my main menu, it opens for a few seconds & then exits without any error.

Next, I thought maybe I will try the Symbian v2 apps. But I can’t even install them, thus, confirming that v1 is appropriate for my phone.

Wud appreciate inputs.

cheers!

So… Since we don’t have you’re email, we’ll try to help you out here, via the blog.

We have successfully installed Python for Symbian 1st Edition and WayMarkr for 1st edition on the N6600 in the US. There may be some discrepancies with European and Asian models phones (in fact I know there are), however we’re only two guys in school and don’t have the money to buy new phones and test on them every other week (although we’d love to).

What you can to is try uninstalling Python and WayMarkr, then reinstalling both again. This has helped us in the past with builds that we knew were good but weren’t installing properly.

Also, we did have some issues with overexposure from the camera on the N6600. The light exposure seemed very sensitive outdoors. If anyone has had other, similar, or different experiences with S60 1st Edition phones we’d love to have the feedback!

Oh and thank you for helping us realize the importance of making email a required field ; )
